THE JACKIE CLARKE COLLECTION
Owing to the generosity of Mrs Anne Clarke, both the Irish nation and the world have gained access to this unique and priceless collection. Jackie Clarke (1927-2000) was a genius collector and from the age of 12 he amassed a collection of Irish material comprising over 100,000 items that spans 40 years.
This material spans 400 years. The earliest item dates from 1617. It comprises many rare and important books on the history of Ireland, and contains manuscripts, photographs, legal papers, pamphlets, hand-bills, newspapers (including the third edition of the Oxford Gazette, descibed as the "first Newspaper" and dated December 1665) news-sheets, circulars, reports, autograph books, letters, periodicals, cartoons, maps, minute books, theses, articles and the rarer 1917 Proclamation. The sheer range of this collection is breath-taking, with many volumes and manuscripts in the Irish language are also to be found.
